Description

In May 1941, the German Waffenamt ordered the development of the VK4501(H), later designated the PzKpfw VI Ausf. E Tiger I, just before the launch of Operation Barbarossa. Henschel und Sohn of Kassel engineered the heavily armored chassis, while Krupp, Germany’s largest munitions manufacturer, developed the turret.

The Tiger I was one of the first German tanks to use a torsion bar suspension with eight interleaved road wheels to bear its 57-ton weight. Armed with a powerful 8.8cm KwK36 L/56 cannon and two MG34 machine guns, it was a feared adversary on the battlefield. Between 1942 and 1944, 1,354 units were produced, including those assembled by Wegmann.
