The DUKW, or “Duck,” was developed by the White Motor Company and General Motors in 1942 to meet the U.S. Army’s demand for an all-terrain amphibious transport. With a payload capacity of 2,400 kg or 25 fully armed troops, the DUKW was an engineering marvel, featuring a welded steel hull with horizontal ribs for reinforcement. It was first used in combat during the Sicilian invasion and gained lasting fame during the Normandy landings. The vehicle continued to see service across both the European and Pacific theaters and was adopted by multiple Allied forces, including Britain and the USSR.
